Suwon Samseong’s Kim Joo-chan has won Goal of the Month after being named Young Player of the Month in July.
The Korea Football Association (KFA)스포츠토토 announced on 11 July that Kim Joo-chan was awarded the July K League Goal of the Month by Dongwon Spring Water of Mother Nature.
Sponsored by Dongwon F&B, the Goal of the Month is awarded to the player who scores the most impressive goal of the month. Two nominees will be selected and the winner will be decided by 100 per cent of fan votes through the K League membership application ‘Kick’.
July’s Goal of the Month was based on five matches from rounds 20-24 of the K League 1. Kim Joo-chan and Lee Dong-kyung (Ulsan Hyundai) were in contention.
Kim exquisitely trapped a cross in the 22nd minute against Gangwon FC in Round 24. He then rattled the Kangwon net with a right-footed curling kick. With the win and Kim’s second goal in as many games, Suwon Samseong leapfrogged Gangwon to the bottom of the table.
Lee Dong-kyung’s goal was no slouch either. In the 24th round match against Jeju United, he scored from an exquisite corner set play. He scored in the 34th minute with a stunning left-footed curler from just outside the penalty area.
The actual voting was close. In total, 15,156 fans participated in the three-day fan poll on Kick from 7-9 July. As a result, Kim Joo-chan, who received 7,680 votes (50.7 per cent), narrowly beat Lee Dong-kyung, who received 7,476 votes (49.3 per cent), to win the Goal of the Month.
After winning the Young Player of the Month award on the 3rd of July, Kim made July his own by winning the Goal of the Month award.
Kim will be presented with the award at the Jeju United game on 18 July at the Suwon World Cup Stadium. Kim will be presented with a trophy and a cash prize of 1 million won.
