The Pittsburgh Pirates finally won.
Pittsburgh defeated the Miami Marlins 3-1 on Thursday (April 24) at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida.
The win ended a 10-game losing streak and improved the Pirates to 35-40. Miami is 43-34.
It was a dramatic come-from-behind victory. Trailing 1-0 after eight innings, Pittsburgh broke the game open with three runs in the top of the ninth.
Against reliever A.J. Puck, leadoff hitter Josh Palacios singled to left and Andrew McCutchen followed with a double steal to put runners on second and third.
Conor Jo’s grounder to shortstop tied the game, and Carlos Santana followed with a single up the middle to make it 2-1. Back-to-back singles by Henry Davis and Tukupita Makano plated another run.
Bae, who started in center field at No. 8, went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. His efforts at the plate were fruitless. In both of his at-bats against left-hander Jesús Luzado, he hit hard with batted-ball speeds over 99 mph, but was unable to get a hit. His batting average dropped to .246 for the season.
Instead, he played solid center field defense and helped his team win. In the second inning, he chased down Nick Fortes’ line drive to right-center field and made the catch. The .440 average hitter turned it into an out.
Right fielder Henry Davis also made a great defensive play in the fifth inning, throwing Brian De La Cruz’s fly ball over the fence.
Newly called up prospect Nick Gonzalez got a taste of the big leagues, going 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.
Starter Luis Ortiz earned his second win of the season, going eight innings and allowing one run on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts. David Bednar closed out the ninth to earn the save.
